Medgrid Project

Medgrid Project

The Justice-Climate Plan aims to ensure energy security, reduce greenhouse gases and boost economic development through a range of ambitious co-development projects around the Mediterranean.

On 20th November 2009, the French government launched an initiative under the Mediterranean Solar Plan (MSP) to study the feasibility of a high-voltage direct current transmission project.

The objective is to transmit electricity from solar or wind power plants to load centres on either rim of the Mediterranean.  Medgrid represents the industrial stage of the project.

The challenge

Electricity is central to economic and social development and to quality of life. Demand for electricity is constantly rising under the pressures of demographics and industrialisation.
